Starting on Wednesday, November 26, construction activity will begin near the Medical Center Metro including additional work to the Perimeter Security Fence, the new vehicle entrance on South Drive and the new Shuttle Bus Loop. To minimize traffic in this area, all commercial and delivery vehicles will be required to use the Center Drive and Old Georgetown Road entrance.
South Drive and Rockville Pike (Metro Entrance) will be the primary entrance for NIH employees choosing to park in Lots T-17 and T-17N, visitors and the public buses that stop at the Medical Center Metro Station. Employees normally entering the campus from South Drive at Rockville Pike (355) to park in other lots on campus should consider using either Wilson Drive or Center Drive during this construction.
The NIH Shuttle stop will be relocated from its current location to the adjacent Ride-On Bus Shelter. There will be no relocation of the other public bus shelters. Pedestrians will also be rerouted through this area to avoid entering the construction zone. A new temporary crosswalk requires that pedestrians cross South Drive and the current exit lanes of the vehicle inspection tent. The NIH Police will monitor pedestrian traffic at this crossing and assist in traffic control during A.M. and P.M. rush hours. Motorists and pedestrians are encouraged to exercise caution when traveling through this area.
